Hospitality 101: Alison Sweeney’s Guide to Making Guests Feel at Home

 

Alison Sweeney is an American actress born and raised in Los Angeles, who recently moved to Arizona with her husband and teenage children. The move to Arizona had been amazing as their new home was filled with a rose garden which sparked a new gardening hobby for her.

She spoke and shared about must-dos while hosting and while we were the guests in others’ houses. As she loves and her favorite activity is hosting here are some of the tips she shares with you.

House Rules by Alison Sweeney

One of the main rules she shared is to take off your shoes when you enter the house. She also said while laughing she and her daughter are always at the stables visiting horses, so our shoes cannot be trusted to come inside.

Alison Sweeney also maintained saying that “guests should only do one thing: Feel at home in their house, no rules applied”.

They want their guests to think they’re super cool and normal, so they try to not have any rules for our guests Alison says.

Great Gifts to Bring as a Guest

Alison Sweeney said, she always loves a bottle of wine, that’s what she brings as a gift when she is a guest. As her being from California she said she has been exposed to some great wine. Her friends and she have traveled to lots of vineyards, and she loves wine that tells a story. Her friend Chad Melville has a winery and makes amazing wine. She loves pulling out the wines that she has tasted at his vineyard and sharing them with my friends when they’re visiting.

What is Alison Sweeney’s Family’s go-to Meal?

On this question, she answered by saying, If she had to pick a favorite, it would be chicken tortilla soup. It’s so warm and satisfying, she just loves it. she tops it with shredded cheese, avocado, homemade tortilla strips, cilantro, and a few crisped-up, chopped jalapeños.”

What do You do When Guests Come Over?

Alison Sweeney said that they like to roll out the red carpet for their guests. Her husband barbecues filet mignon or New York strips and she will make popovers, twice-baked potatoes, and a salad. They like to have a fully-stocked bar so everyone can choose what they want to drink.

How does Alison Sweeney make her guests feel special in their homes?

Alison Sweeney said, they love to host and have people over, and they love to set the scene. They have speakers throughout our house and they try to make and play playlists based on what would be best for the guests coming over. She loves spending time making them. They also light candles, even if they’re battery-powered. They like to have a lot of different lighting that’s low-lit, rather than harsh overhead living.

Alison also tries to be pretty flexible with guests. They want our guests to feel at home—if they wake up early, they want to make sure we have breakfast stuff available for them. If they’re lactose intolerant, they want them to have the right coffee creamer. They teach them how to use the coffee machine, so they can make anything they’d like, wake up whenever they want, and do whatever they like.

What makes Alison’s house feel like home?

Their dogs. They have two rescue dogs and when you open the door and they run up to meet you, that’s just the best feeling ever.

How does Alison make her at home while away on set?

When she travels for work, she brings photos of her family with her. She puts them in cheap, small frames and puts them wherever she is staying.

My home is no different—photographs of my family and friends are everywhere around the house. Whether they’re of a past trip or silly faces of the kids, she wants guests to see a glimpse into their life when they’re in our home.

What’s Alison’s design style?

They lean towards the Colonial style. Her husband and she love a traditional and classic feel over a modern look. She loves patterns, loves fabrics, and loves warming up a room with drapes, curtains, throw blankets, and rugs. Her aunt was an interior designer, so she felt like she inspired me.

Does Alison prefer neutrals or colors?

If you walked throughout her home you would find both, but if she had to pick—color!

What’s In Her Garden

As we talked about earlier their move to Arizona had been amazing as their new home was filled with a rose garden which sparked a new gardening hobby for her. Those plants were planted by previous owners so concerning them she has decided to maintain those gardens and plants by herself.

She also said that She loves the challenge of it all. She would have never expected herself to like gardening like this—it’s so rewarding when the plants are blooming and she can say, ‘I did that!’

Alison Sweeney said:

“I have this rose garden, and it’s my favorite thing about the whole house. I pour a cup of coffee in the morning and walk around the garden, trim the roses, and take a few to put in a vase inside the house. I just bought stuff today to replace a few of the plants and to fertilize them to get them ready for spring,” Sweeney says. “I love the challenge of it all. I would have never expected myself to like gardening like this—it’s so rewarding when the plants are blooming and I can say, ‘I did that!’”

She said that she is a storyteller at heart and says of her new role as a screenwriter for the mystery film. She loves being a part of the whole narrative and bringing the whole story together. It’s a dream come true for her. Every single movie, she feels so grateful and she loves every single part of it.
